The Omloop is already set to take its place back on the 2021 BRC calendar, on 3 and 4 September 2021. Following the cancellation of the 2020 ConxioN Omloop van Vlaanderen, Koninklijke Autoclub Midden-Vlaanderen (KAMV) is not sitting on its hands.
That edition 2020 had to be cancelled due to the corona pandemic was definitely a disappointment for the organisers. The 61st ConXioN Omloop van Vlaanderen was able to present a brilliant field of competitors with 35 R5 cars, the arrival of the Tour European Rally series, a strong field of M-Cup and the arrival of the HRCR Stage Masters, the Mini Sport Cup and the Volvo Euro Cup. Not to mention a full RACB Criterium section and the strong interest in the Rock 'n Roll Classics Regularity.
The appeal of the Omloop van Vlaanderen proved greater than ever and clearly demonstrates that the new wind blowing within the club is producing mature fruit in no time. That the entire rally was staged during the corona-pandemie shows the flexibility and, above all, drive within Autoclub Midden-Vlaanderen. The oldest BRC rally on the calendar is more alive than ever.
The preparations for edition 2020 were not a wasted effort and the enthusiasm among partners and especially participants remained intact over the past few months. The 61st edition, which would have been a top edition, is purely a postponement, not a reprieve.
Thanks to this rock-solid foundation, the broad outlines for 2021 have already been set: a compact race with 223 kilometres against the clock, spread over two days and 20 challenging special stages that are entirely specific to the character of the Omloop. The rally will be preceded by a test session and shakedown on Wednesday 1 September in Slypskapelle. This was a big change within the organisation in 2019 but quickly proved to be a successful formula.
This shows the organisation is all set for a smashing 61st edition. 2021 will probably not be a normal year either, but KAMV already wants to clarify to the organisers and partners involved and show that the monument, which the ConXioN Omloop van Vlaanderen clearly is thanks to a glorious past, is a beacon on the rally calendar.
