Over 120 teams get ready for 61st Omloop van Vlaanderen

Over 120 teams, spread across more than ten international championships and brand cups, are gearing up for the 61st Omloop van Vlaanderen, which has been thoroughly redesigned. Among the participants, a pack of foreigners and branded cup riders are signing up. Tickets are still available.

Participants come from six different countries, obviously with the Belgians leading the way, including the current top six in the Belgian rally championship. The second largest group is the Swedes, with no fewer than 10 teams. They are coming as part of the Volvo Euro Cup. In addition, a pack of Brits and Irish come across the Channel, including for the British Mini Sport Cup and the TER Historic. On the starting list we also find a number of French and with Edgar Vigo López there is even a Spaniard at the start. He is aiming for the title in the TER 2WD championship. The Omloop van Vlaanderen thus proves its international appeal, despite the strict coronas for foreigners.

Soon the teams will be introduced to a thoroughly redesigned Omloop. On Friday, 63.56 race kilometres are already scheduled, spread over seven stages. The special stages of Houthulst and Rumbeke will be run for the first time on Friday. Two passages at De Ruiter and the familiar Zoning complete the programme on the long opening day. That long opening day also allows drivers to take part in the Power Stage on Saturday.

Another 150 kilometres against the clock will follow on Saturday, spread over three loops of four tests with Beveren, the Zoning, Zilverberg and, of course, Passendale which will undoubtedly be the show-stopper with its 25.29 race kilometres. This makes Passendale one of the longest stages in the Belgian rally championship. Beveren will close the 61st Omloop van Vlaanderen as the Power Stage, where there will be a fight for extra points.
